As with all capacities you need to take into account that computers (and RAM manufacturers) calculates size in binary 2^10 = 1024 for thousand, while HD and Flash memory manufacturers calculate in decimal where 1000 = 1000.
For drives measured in GB this mean you need to multiply the drives size with ~0.93 to get the size your computer will calculate it to:
2 GB ? 1.86 GB
4 GB ? 3.72 GB
8 GB ? 7.44 GB
So, yes in a way you are right, on the 8 GB nano about 550 MB will be "missing".
This has very little to do with formatting (this was an issue back when drives were just a couple of MB, then the formatting table and such actually took up a fair portion of the disk).
This isn't exactly news.
Thanks Mitthrawnuruodo and Chundles. I know it's not news, but I wanted to know. Want a 2 gig, but did not want to lose too much space. 1.8 is fine. 1.4 would drive me to the 4 gig ( may anyways for th $50). Frankly, despite having more than 1,000 cd's plus iTunes downloads, I never filled up my 1gen Mini.
Thanks again for the explanations.

It was judged to be a hoax, just like all the MBP rumors so far.
Are they all really a hoax? Or is Apple covering up true rumors....? Hmmm

Apple only cares about money
Apple being a corporation with shareholders, you are 100% absolutely correct.

I don't mind Radio Shack for random overpriced cables in an emergency, but I would never buy anything else in there. The salespeople are just far too pushy and circle around you like vultures attracted to a rotting carcass.

Apple may have released Xcod 2.4. But it's only for those at the WWDC. I checked Apple's ADC website, and they have it listed, but it redirects you to http://connect.apple.com. I did some more digging, and they only have 2.3 on the site. They might upload it after the WWDC.

So, the way it is now, you buy Photoshop for around $650 and after 18 months you can upgrade for $190. Total: $840 for 36 months, plus you still have your software to use for as long as you want if you choose not to upgrade anymore...
So, $35 x 36 months = $1260 and after the 36 months finnish, you have nothing...
I don't see a big advantage here, unless you only use photoshop in a few projects a year... I don't know anyone who does that, tho...
Biggest advantage I can see would be adding and removing seats on a month-by-month basis based on business needs. For example, imagine your business suddenly picks up for a couple of months, and need an extra license for a contractor or other temporary worker you bring on.
You're right, though, in that if you miscalculate, you may end up paying more for a temporary license than you would for a permanent one.

Love the new look, though the icons suck.
Also wondering why iTunes doesn't recognize my audiobooks.

Beatles are not my generation so I don't know a lot about them..but weren't they into free spirits and happiness and what not? Why are they all about suing and being greedy now?
Edit: which of them are even alive anymore to profit? Or is this the doing of their heirs?
Two are alive and they have wives and kids and in one case grandkids. As a parent I would love to pass on what I created and/or earned to my son. Most parents would love to do this for their families if possible, whether it is a huge amount or a small amount. Again when you have created any business, large or small, it is the owners legal right and obligation to protect it and prosper. That is capitalism.
I work representing photographers and license the work they create and rarely sell it outright. This way my artists who create the work, can benefit from reusage sort of like a royalty.
It is so easy to go after the bands, actors and artists once they hit it big, but they would not make all of that money if there was not an audience for it.

Ugh, this is going to give my PC-loving friends fuel for YEARS. Just like every little crap article that comes out about ANY possible Apple security problem.
The taunts are already pouring in! "Ha! Ha! The shoe is on the other foot now!" "Oh how the tables do turn!" "Guess you can't act all high and mighty NOW, huh?" "Intel chips and now exploding batteries? Where do I sign up for a DellI mean, Mac again?"
AHH!!!

'fixed' for me.
ironically the DAY they released the update.my macbook started shutting down intermittingly..
instaleld it..works fine so far.as for the fans..they still go 'nuts' when i run a few videos on youtube..is THAT normal?
like they get pretty loud ugh
The loud fan ISN'T normal, and it's something I've been fighting about with Apple ever since I bought this POS machine a day after they were released. I'm on my second one now (the first one was replaced because it was broken right out of the box), and this one sounds like a jet airplane getting ready for take off, with the turbines winding up and down.
What particularly makes me upset is that we've got two MacBooks in my family, mine and my wife's, and hers is completely silent. When the fan does kick in on her machine, it makes a nice "whoosh" sound of air being pushed, and nothing else. Mine make this whiney noise coming from the fan itself, so loud you can't even heard the "whoosh" of air being moved.
My MacBook has already been in AppleCare once for a fan replacement, as well as the heat-sink replacement. I had hoped this new firmware would slow the darned fan down, but nope--it's still buzzing away like an electric razor.
I've owned five Apple laptops prior to this one (dating back to a PowerBook 520), and this MacBook is by far the worst one of the bunch. Worse even than my "flaming" PowerBook 5300 (which still works and doesn't make a peep).

I would really like to see what the difference in size between the new nanos and old nanos is. if it really is 52% smaller, which doesn't look it from the picture, I will definitely consider picking one up. has anyone seen any side by side pictures of the new and old nano?

You make some great points and I think the key to a successful reduction in military spending is to reduce it over time. A sudden 30-50% cut in the budget would be horrific and not just for a military program but in any program. But why not aim to reduce it from 600 billion today, to 400 billion fifteen years from now? The key is discipline but such a trait is not something I have seen Washington demonstrate. :(
Only problem with this is that it does not reflect the REAL U.S. defense budget. We have so many defense related expenses wrapped up in other departments that it hides the real cost.
The real U.S. defense budget is estimated around 1.2 trillion. Yup, now how ridiculous is that?

I've been reading about every other post in this thread and as a long time Beatles fan, wanted to weigh in. I already own the entire Beatles catalog on CD and carry all their releases (minus "Live at the BBC" and a good number of tracks on the Anthologies) around with me on MP3 CD. I used to have it on iPod, but I got a shuffle and gave my 15GB to my wife. So, I have no need to purchase the music. Even if they remastered it, it would still be in 128kb AAC, and that would be a waste.
I would, however, buy a Beatles iPod in a second. Hell, I might even camp out at an Apple store for that. Some people here have said the band is old, and their time is over. I couldn't disagree more. Their music is as fresh as it was in the 60s. They completely changed the face of rock and roll and more importantly, the face of recording. Some of the things the band and George Martin did in the studio are groundbreaking. My list of favorite bands changes on a near daily basis, but the Beatles are always locked in at number 1 on that list. Their influence on modern artists is undeniable. I hear the influences in so many types of music, although that is disappearing with the garbage pawned off on the public as music these days.
I hope these rumors are true because I do think:
1) Apple Computer innovated computing and the music industry with the iPod and iTunes, just as the Beatles did.
2) The ads would be classic
3) The thought of McCartney and Ringo with Steve Jobs on the MacWorld stage makes me tingle with anticipation.
4) Apple Corps was created to breed and inspire creativity, and I think Apple computer does the same thing. It's a match made in heaven.
Paul McCartney is quite a jerk. I wouldn't want to see Steve Jobs insult himself by appearing with him.
Apple Corps breed, inspire creativity? Geewhiz, I don't know whether that's the case... enough LSD and that helps
Honestly I like some Beatles songs but this is the most overrated band in the history of mankind. Even Cat Stevens and Steely Dan turned out much better.

Can we get the new ones with the school promotion?
Nope. You can read the PDF on the apple website for details.
seems kinda sly to unload the old nanos on poor students.
You're not suggesting we should feel sorry for someone getting a FREE nano, even if it's the previous model?
While many people are looking for Apple to integrate a radio tuner into the iPod it isn't going to happen.
They already have a radio tuner add-on if you really want one. Personally, the whole point of getting an iPod is so I can avoid radio.

Sorry, that is utter crap. My best friend in grade school was raised completely without religion, and he is the nicest person in the world. Meanwhile, there are copious and abundant examples of self-centered, amoral, greedy bastards preaching jesus to the masses: if religion cannot help them, what value is it?
Your best friend may not have been raised by his parents with religion, but the society in which he was raised is influenced by Judeo-Christian values. Even atheists often display Judeo-Christian values because of the effect of society around them.
Don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying we need religion to raise children, but we better have a moral code of some kind to replace it with.

Just going to put this right here:
"What would I do? I'd shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders" -Michael Dell
I do love that quote. Of all the Winbox makers Dell seems to be the one with the bleakest future. I'm hoping HP can do something with Palm and not waste an opportunity to increase diversity in the market. But this is HP, they seem more interested in making printers (which are still a pain to set up) than innovating in the computer market. (I'd love it if they'd innovate in the printer market and make a network printer that isn't a complete pain.)

Yep, get the kiddies hooked on iDevices early. Apple everything, paint their rooms white and let the mind control begin :)
My sentiments exactly. Get them while they're still in diapers, if possible. It worked to convert the Microsoft Wintard generation many years ago. Microsoft totally indoctrinated millions of unsuspecting consumers and turned them into Wintard drones. Now they're trapped by their own myopic vision of the future and refuse let go of the ancient Windows platform when a new order is upon them. That's why those friggin' brainwashed IT managers are nothing but Windows lapdogs and never want to let new technology into corporations. Thank heavens Apple is doing an end run around them by going above and below their narrow-minded Windows ways. I can't wait to see Microsoft's next earnings report reflecting Windows license sales tapering off. It's time for Microsux Windblows to get some post-PC era payback.

Ah good to see that it's not worth upgrading my Core Duo MB to the new one, I think the speed increase wil lbe negligble (comparing a 1.83Ghz CD with 1.83C2D)
Yeah the benefit for C2D is the bigger cache size mostly. That's only available on 2GHz and up AFAIK.
I'd still rather have the new potentially bug fixed hardware though.
