Funny stuff. And yet people refuse to learn. There are plenty of threads today about iPhone, iPad and other products that are otherwise indistinguishable from that one.
Re: iPod classic. It's sad to say it, but I agree it is done. The world's just moved past the design which has not substantially changed since 2001 (today's iMacs are substantially different than those from 2001 (http://support.apple.com/kb/sp109)). It's still got the same layout, even if the materials, screen, scroll wheel and screen have seen revisions. But these days, it's all about touch, flash memory and the fabled "convergence" (remember that word? Everyone was throwing it around as the "next big thing", but nothing ever really worked. But then it actually happened, even though people forgot about it). It would be nice if Apple acknowledged it and officially laid it to rest on its 10 year anniversary, rather than just quietly discontinuing it.

Despite all the talk about paper having "superior resolution" to displays, the human eye can't really tell the difference in the size of the dots making up the print past a certain point.
The main reason displays cause eyestrain when trying to read something like a book is the fact that they're backlit. Basically, it's akin to staring into a small flashlight. The much talked-about "e-ink" or "e-paper" is interesting because it would simply work with reflected light from existing sources - just like reading real paper.
If the other "video ipod" rumors are true, Apple is looking at using the new "OLED" display technology for the next iPod. That's not going to be quite as "paper-like" as the "e-ink/e-paper" technologies, but should provide better contrast (and resolution) than LCD technology. So that means it will be better than most devices at reducing eyestrain while reading, but not as easy on the eyes as a real paper book either.
Yes. Yes it would.
Until display resolution matches paper resolution, the e-book will remain relatively unpopular.
This does seem to make a serious run at the "iPod for Education" crowd, though -- fighting to keep brand loyalty with the kids, I spose ...

Parents these days...
Are you ****ing serious? How the hell did you get this from letting his kid use the iPad occasionally?

I reakon that the banner on the wall has another banner behind it and that The more posts I read and the discussion on 'is it or isn't it' the top banner and it will be removed after the keynote - I think it is a psyc-out. There are the usual banners hanging from the ceiling with the ubiquotous black clothes and I would think that if something major is on those puppies it/they will find their way to the banner on the wall as well )or more exactly - the banner under the banner on the wall!).
We all know Apple didn't get much press with the over-hyped 'iPod stereo' event - in fact more disappointment than praise - and the media was less than lukewarm after the announcement, so I think Apple are down-playing the WWDC with the banner which can only lead to the 'wow' factor if some new hardware is released - and i hope we don't get new hardware with no case redesign.
Although the 'G5' side shot could have a differnt front with the two drive bays, or be overall smaller but the same scale thus it looks like the existing model from the side (hope not as the cheese grater look is a little old) and cinema displays are conspicuos by their absence...
I can dream and will continue to do so until until next week...

You can change the tracking settings to make it faster...
TY for the info. I have been made aware of the settings from a few people. I still like the Trackpad better though.;)

As happy and excited I am about this update, I can't stop feeling a little irritated about the amount of time it has taken for it to come out.
It is 3 years since I first almost bankrupted myself by buying an octo-core machine. And I bought it based on all the rhetoric Apple spewed. Since then the only thing I seem to own that actually utilizes all that power is bleedin' Handbrake, an open source application.
Don't get me wrong, watching Handbrake crunch HD video at 120 FPS is a thing of wonder, but using FCP and having 7 of 8 cores sat there idly doing nothing has profoundly bothered me.
I guess it is my own fault for being such an early adopter and being so utterly addicted to Apple's marketing hype.
PS., Please god, don't let this new Final Cut be anything like the first iteration of Aperture 3. One of my worst software nightmares ever.

I would much rather have the rumored 2048x1536 display...If 3D is an added bonus to the res bump, then no harm done...I would just have to "dial" it down (if similar to 3DS). Ive got 20:10 vision and 3D makes me naucious after 10min of viewing:o
If course, I'm also the guy who cant read in cars without feeling sick:o

24 must be your musical IQ; get some education before you enter discussions like this.
This isn't a discussion, this is a bunch of people with nothing better to do than argue about a music store.
Bach is awesome.
The Beatles are awesome.

American foreign policy has indeed come up quite short in the foresight department. However, Khadahphee (or however it gets spelt) rose to power with no real assistance from other countries and has only been supported indirectly, through people buying oil. The only support Libya gets from the US is indirect, from irresponsible excess in oil consumption that keeps the prices up for everyone.
You'd be right except for our military ties to Libya.

Seems we've played a significant role in arming Libya in recent history, though not nearly as much as European nations.

There's more men than women in the world, so that should earn us more respect.
I thought there were slightly more women? It would make sense that there would be as they live longer!

As an ex-employee of a computer retail store, I always used to get the questions.."What's the different between XP home & Pro?" "Does XP Pro come with Word, that's why it costs more?" Etc..
Microsoft continues to ship buggy software and confuse the hell out of people.
And for those complaining that OS X was more expensive than Windows Vista over time, think again...The updates aren't as needed from one version to the next, so you may choose to skip one or two, for example from 10.3 to 10.4, and skip to 10.5. It will cost you $129.99 (or whatever the price for 10.5 is), while Windows Vista costs a lot more, and it's just another bugged version of Windows XP.
I went Mac a year ago and will NEVER buy/build another PC.

Has anyone noticed that the refurb section at the Apple Online Store is completely out of stock of all 15" and 13" Macbook Pros? I can't remember this being the case recently and it makes me wonder if this is related to a possible new release of those size configurations. There are multiple configs of the 17" MBP available.
This has been brought up a lot, and the consensus seems to be that refurb inventory doesn't correlate at all with an impending release.

Because it's a ridiculous feature that only retards, who have been brainwashed into thinking it's cool, want, but the rest of us who will never use it (or even go out of their way to avoid it) will pay for.
The human brain is capable of decoding depth out of an image using a myriad of other clues (such as occlusion) and the use of the stereoscopic effect is, in my opinion, overrated. It just results in blurred or jarred motion and a crap viewing experience.
Just because you might find 3D fun doesn't make you "brainwashed". In fact... because you seem to be so anti-3D... you might be the one that is brainwashed

Is that why AT&T sold a lot more iPhones that vz last quarter?
Also vz just wants you to go over your cap. More money for them
Check VZW site, VZW charges no overage charges, data is unlimited. no caps no overage charges just unlimited data. WHAT DON'T you understand.
And the VZW throttling post on BGR.com was just a BS warning, NO ONE HAS EVER BEEN THROTTLED! Go the androidforums and you will not find anyone that have ever been throttled!
Now with att try and use alot of data then att will claim you are tethering and automatically switch you to tiered data.
after 2GB , att charges 10 a GB. that can get expensive fast!

I seriously doubt this is a major concern ATM for home users with secured wifi access points (and by that, I mean wifi APs that filter MAC addresses). In order for someone to use this exploit, they would undoubtedly have to be on your network..

My girlfriends MacBook, runs at 15 degrees C pretty much all the time.
Here is a screen shot,
Rich.
FWIW, 15C = 59F. I've never heard of a processor running that low. Maybe it does, but that sounds really really odd.

Did the "Gapless Determination" detect your The Wall album or did you, like me, have to set the Gapless Album tag yourself...?

"business acumen"? Hahaha. Grow up, kid. You have demonstrated that you know nothing of the computer industry or the position that Apple holds, but merely fabricated what position YOU think Apple holds, "as a shareholder". You haven't admitted when you were wrong and you're just blindly arguing for Apple.
I know the following. Apple is turning a profit in a crappy market. Apple layoffs have been light. Apple is not a company with the recources (based on market cap) to fab its own chips. These are things which you can verify for yourself.

No, but you suggested that we should rally around some cause (design chips, boycott Apple, etc.) and vocalize. I merely pointed out that neither would do any good.
You are not getting kudos for making good points, you are getting kudos for making popular replies. The ones that most Mac users here want to hear - How much Apple owns and how they have a masterplan that, mysteriously, never seems to quite work out for them, now does it.
When we started this argument, I observed that executive teams at publicly traded companies prolly knew more than you about what was happening. A day later, with have a 64 Bit IBM chip, with many sources (sfgate.com, cnn.com, etc.) independently confirming it is to become an Apple part.
Hmmmm.....looks like it worked out to me.
Well it seems as though Apple has gone with IBM, so part of their "plan" is to improve chip speed, just as i suggested they should.
Without you, I'm sure they'd be gunning to slow things down. I'm sure you'll be back to tell us how this 1.8 GHz 64 bit Power4 derivative is slow compared to the 3.8 GHz PIV next year.
I never suggested that the only way for Apple to survive is purely chip speed, i suggested that that is a major part of it and to say it isn't is moronic.
I guess it's a good thing I haven't, else you could call me a moron.
In the end, Nispy, we have agreed on many points and if this whole argument had gone a little better, without petty, childish insults on your part, which i'm ashamed to say that i have contributed to in this last post, and complete missunderstandings of my posts, we could have come to some kind of constructive conclusion. Clearly that wasn't your aim.

My roommate, sister and a good friend all have 12" powerbooks. I've called my sister and friend to let them know. I was home over lunch when this news broke and so I pulled the battery out of my roommates powerbook and it falls withing the SN range being recalled. This, for him, is actually a GOOD thing. His Powerbook battery is at 52% after only one year of ownership and 177 load cycles. Now it looks like he'll be getting a free battery from Apple. He never had a problem with it but free is free.
