This is interesting to listen to! The reason this conversation is so beat to death is because both machines are SO VERY NICE!

I bought the 11 initially and loved it. But, after a few long sessions using it (4 or 5 hours straight), I began to have serious 2nd thoughts. My eyes just grew tired too fast. I ordered a 13 just to see what I thought. Well, I returned the 11 for the 13 and I am as happy as a clam! If I had kept the 11 it would have been a bit better traveling, but the 13 is pretty compact and light as well.

But, the 11 is maybe the sexiest looking personal computer I have ever seen! But alas, I am 55 years old and I need a little bigger screen. One more thing that I really enjoy more about the 13 is the longer battery life.

Each person has to weigh which factors are the most important to them. It is great that both if the Airs are so great that people labor over the decision as to which is the best for them individually.

Another thing that swayed me. I had a Dell xps m1210 (12" screen) for a couple years (in my PC days) and it was my favorite Windows PC of all times. However, when I got another laptop I went to a Dell 17. I only enjoyed it for about 1 month - it was too darn big, hot and heavy. It was at that time I went to a white MacBook and fell in love with Macs. As of rt now in my business I have access to iMac 27, MBP 17, MBP 15, MBP 13' MBA 13 and iPad 2. Right now I am traveling so am writing this on iPad 2. The MBA 13 is with me on the trip and will be pulled out when I get serious about working!

Honestly, the MBA 13 is the machine that I use 90% of the time when I am working. The iPad 2 is what I use when I am just relaxing or responding to email.

I hardly use the iMac 27 because I hate sitting at a desk. Once in a while when I am working late in the home office I will sit in the recliner with the MBA 13 as primary and connected to the MBP 17 as a 2nd display via Air Display.

Each person has to work thru their own requirements . I think it is great apple has so many great machines to choose from and work with.

What does the screen look like when you remove the front flass panel? Is is still glossy under there? If the glass panel is just stuck on magnetically like that then what prevents companies of making simple bezels to replace it with the screen area cut out?

Still quite glossy but not as glossy. Not like the anti-glare MBP's at all. Most people who've seen an iMac turned on without the glass panel will say it looks better 'naked'. It looks brighter and sharper. Problem is, it's so fragile without it, scratches incredibly easily, attracts dust like you wouldn't believe and fingerprints take a lot of buffing to get out. It's also probably not great for the airflow.

I never thought of myself as an iMac type of guy. More of a MBP for work, Mac Pro for home.

But the 24" iMac is shaping up to be a great computer. 750 gig drive is sweet, 3 gigs of memory, huge display, and fast.

I always hated the wires and general visual mess of the normal desktop. Even in the age of bluetooth, there are too many wires.

I think the 24" iMac is shaping up to be a great prosumer computer. I'm seriously considering purchasing one now.

That was the PCie x1900 (cut down version of the x1900xt available for the intel mac pro) as it only had 256mb ram.. iam not too sure how much further it was cut down, iam thinking it also had less pipelines than the MP version.

There will be an iPhone 5 this year.
Last year iPhone 3GS sales dropped dramatically once the iPhone 4 'prototype' leak was out.
This year Apple is trying to squeeze as much as they can out of the iPhone 4.
I'm still holding out for the iPhone 5.

The 120 Hard drive, fantastic, about time, and you can buy it separately, Yeah i know its expensive, but if you listen to Major Nelsons podcast you'll find out why, and you get a cable to transfer the contents from your 20gig hd to the new one.

Admittedly, I stopped listening to Major Nelson after he said that EA making you buy extra jerseys was, in fact, giving you a choice. This was in contrast to almost everyone elses opinion that we were now being nickel and dimed for things that used to be free.

So since I have stopped listening, if you could, please explain about the hard drive being worth $179. Because Newegg is listing 120 gig laptop drives for less than $80.

Looks real nice, but it's too bad they couldn't keep the standard USB connector built-in.
Yes, I used to want a Shuffle (even though I don't need one - I have a Nano) but now there is no reason to have one (for me, that is). I'm sure it's a great improvement in many ways, but without the built-in USB connector there is now nothing special for me about it.

    What and where is RADAR?

Radar is Apple's internal bug tracking system (has been since 1991, iirc).

    <edit>
The known issues list there is pretty harsh... sounds like lots of half done changes to me :)

I would suspect perhaps the iPhone available with several different carriers. Do you really think Apple would go the MVNO route with only one phone to sell? Unless a smattering of iPhones are coming at us, I would suspect that it'll available just through GSM carriers. However, Apple could look to minimize risk by taking a bunch of money for exclusive rights to say, T-Mobile, but it doesn't seem like the Apple thing to do.

From what I've seen, there isn't much of a benefit to "enterprise" hard drives within the same family, that is to say a Consumer SATA 3 TB 7200 rpm vs a Enterprise SATA 3 TB 7200 rpm. Google's study shows they use "consumer" grade, and numerous studies have shown that there is no significant difference in failure rate.
I realize where you're coming from.

Disks nowadays are definitely made from the same primary components (enterprise models used to provide different mechanicals, such as spindle motors and servos). But there are some differences (whether they matter or not is debatable, such as "cherry picked platters" and additional sensors), but as you mention, the firmware is significant in some cases (definitely with hardware RAID cards).

If running a Linux box and using ZFS, consumer disks could be used. But I've seen too many failures lately, particularly of consumer grade disks (Seagate and Hitachi in particular), so I'm hesitant to trust them for high duty cycle requirements (definitely agree that stated specifications aren't what happens in the real world, such as ~31% failure rates with Seagate 7200.12's just off of newegg's user reviews <qualified them by actual failure rates I could determine from the reviews, just presume the 1 or 2 egg ratings = failures, as some got 5 stars due to newegg's return policy>). I even take the time to surface scan disks when possible out of the bag, and find that the enterprise models don't exhibit as many bad sectors in general (can lend one to think the "cherry picked" platters do have a positive influence).

I'm not convinced of the previous heat arguments (sudden death; but in general with electronics, heat over time tends to have a negative effect on overall lifespan). As per vibration, I'm a bit torn (multiple arrays in the same enclosure and no rubber dampening, I'm concerned that the vibration could be a problem on the newer disk types as the platter densities are high and the heads ride closer to the surface than past disk designs - I did note that the articles have some age to them, and don't reflect disks made in the last few years; article is 4 years old).

The OP indicated that he has a Mac Pro he can use, if thats the case then go DAS by all means, Linux will be a compromise...
Then you're talking about a RAID card, enclosures, and enterprise disks (need them for the recovery time settings), where the disks alone would eat the majority of the budget ($8100 of it). That would leave $1900 for card/s and enclosures (SAS expander for backup disks and 1:1 port/disk ratio for the primary pool would likely be more cost effective).

Linux is a compromise, but based on the stated budget, it seems to be the way to go.

Coupled with a higher res screen, this will be awesome, IMO.

You hit it on the mark, but here is the big question what kind of video processing would it need to do retinal which is what I figure you mean to make it all smooth. that is a lot of pixels to run.

    Anyone have ideas?

I think it is a good sign.

It is an official biography which means he will spend the next few months co-operating, telling the author his life story so if he was a man on his last legs he wouldn't have the energy or the health to spend the next year reciting every moment of his life.

I think it may be a sign he will not return full time to Apple but I think he has a few years yet in him
