Also I gotta say the AI is vastly improved but only on the enemy side. Why are my squadmates such mororns?!

I'm guessing the screen will be tilt-able?

As an illustrator I would expect a stylus for more precision work including drawing.

It will be a thousand times more powerful than an iPad running full OSX and run all the applications required for developing software that runs on the consumer only iPad.

Not sure why so many people are against it.

My only other requirement is a windscreen wiper to clean my grubby finger marks.:D

Maybe all these rumors of a "squashed iphone 5 mini" are really leaks of the next gen ipod classic? That type of form factor makes more sense considering the way things are headed. Touch screens and all.

^ This is likely. Don't really need a home button when all you use it for is music. I might be thinking of a different leak from what he's referring though, either way...

EDIT: What I find hilarious is the fact that the majority of those naysayers from 2001 probably ate their words and bought an iPod in the end :D

The board that oversees what the top 3 executives do at Apple knows more than you about production issues of MILLIONS of hi-tech devices.

Anybody familiar with production and distribution issues knows that despite excellent planning there may be issues during production that cannot be forecast.

Selling and shipping MILLIONS in a few weeks is a exactly fiasco for whom?
There are a lot of haters on this site. And I mean a LOT.

Plus there are a few people who have zero connection with reality. The type of people who ignore COGS, have no understanding of the economics of consumer electronics manufacturing and marketing, and disregard the basic laws of Newtonian physics. Basically, people who live in an effing dreamworld based on an totally domestic American worldview largely based on sci-fi movies and pop culture, with no real world experience as a contributor to a global economy.

Don't you have to pay a restocking fee, even if you're within the 14-day return period?

More than likely, but that doesn't bother me. I don't mind spending a little extra and causing myself a bit of hassle if it means I can get the supposed 23" iMac.

No offense taken-did not think you harsh. As I was typing it I thought " Oh boy, I'm sure this is one of those constant quaetsions" - should I be doing this.
Was afraid Cundles might have gone ballistic. Especially after Tuesdays constant postings of some very old news:)

Sorry if I ripped on you back then mate. I was going through some nasty withdrawal after falling off the wagon of my codeine addiction and it made me really irritable for a while.

Back to my normal cheerful self now until the pain flares up and I have to jump off the wagon again.

Sorry once again. Hope my explanation made some sense.

The iPad, no matter how parasitic it is, is still a real computer.

And wow at all the people "finding problems" with OTA updates. Android has been at it for years on many carriers and with many different data caps in place, rooted phones, phones with custom ROMs, etc.. and yet none of those guys whine about OTA updates. The Apple crowd really needs to get with it. It's optional people, it is for Android, no reason it wouldn't be for iPhone.

    Options are good.

How can it be a real computer and you cant even turn it on without syncing it to a real computer? So basically to buy an ipad you have to own another $500 piece of hardware to use an ipad. I love my ipad and it has basically replaced my laptops, but its a shame that you cant manage your music, sync your apps or update your OS without being connected to a real computer.

    Thats no true.

Apple just a few days ago released Mac OS X 10.6.7 and was only 475MB, and the Combo update was only 1.12GB. Mac OS X 10.6.6 brought the Mac App Store and was only 143MB.

I don't know why your updates are 4GB.

As much as I love them, all of Apple's designs are getting old. The Macbook (nee iBook) has looked the same (minus a few paint jobs) for over 5 years; the current iMac design harkens back to the eMac (yes, I know, its flatter, what an innovation...wheee), which in turn was highly derivative of the original iMac. The MacBook Pro is just an AluPB, which in turn was merely a revision of the original Titanium G4. Now, the "new" iPod nano is nothing more than a iPod mini that went on a diet, and the full iPod, although much sleeker than its predecessors, is still essentially the same design as the iPod that came out in 2001. And the story goes on: the Mac Pro, a warmed over PowerMac G5; the Airport/Airport extreme, essentially unchanged since its release; the Airport Express, a power adapter with flashing lights; the iSight, unchanged since its release; the Mighty Mouse, same design as the Apple Pro Mouse, etc. Essentially, the only new designs in the last three years have been: the Mac mini, the iPod shuffle, and the Cinema Displays, none of which could be considered to be attention-getters. Even the new, unreleased "iTV" is copying the Mac mini design. Not too impressive for a company which claims high design as a main benefit. Where is the new cube? the iMac (& G4)? the tiBook? There is nothing fresh or innovative about their current lineup, nothing exciting or innovative.Instead, its all inoffensively sterile, to my eyes; walking into an Apple store has become similar to walking into IKEA, nothing unexpected, just clean lines. It's like they've become artistically constipated. Or is this just what we get for Apple's new push on "competitive prices"?

In my opinion, its time for some fresh blood, someone with a new vision. And yes, I'm looking squarely at you, Steve and Jonathan. I want to be excited again, and not just by the "guts" of the computer. I, for one, miss the Macworlds of 5 years ago...

Agreed, sadly. My first reaction to the new mini is... I mean nano is... the mini is not old enough to be retro yet! Slipping in an intermediary (the origional nano, which itself was a throwback to the origional ipod) in the line of the shrinking mini does not make it revolutionary, but in fact, makes it not even keep pace with being evolutionary! While I know that many will argue that the reason is that today's designs are perfect, and also that, particularly with laptops, color and texture and corners are the only things you can play with, that's not enough. Apple has, previously, been amazing, shocking us and making us fall in love in one move. But it's been a good long while before we've been shocked at all, and it's hard to stay in love this long.

Remember the recent redesign that has swept across BMW's lineup? The awful trunk on the 5 series, the controversy, the debate? And how tired Mercedes looked in comparison, how bland? But it wasn't a sure thing, the new beamers were risky, right? I, for one, thought that the previous generation was about as close to visually perfect as any car since a dusenberg, and hated the redesign. But.... it's grown on me, and I'm thuroughly fond of the new theme, and the old looks tired to me (in another 15 years it'll look great, no doubt).

That's what apple needs. But now they're like mercedes- beautiful, for sure, but also boring. Same with the OS! They have the capability to pull off risky designs, for sure. They would definately be a BMW rather than a GM if the decided to actually design something. But no, they can't even come up with a '07 toyota camry's worth of design.

So I'm hoping that they've been doing this strategically, to manage their risks a bit while things like the intel switch, introduction of the nano (with, remember, less memory for more money), have been providing as much risk as they can take. The important thing is, now that they're transitioned, and now that they don't have to work to sell ipods, they've got to take those risks, and do that work, or else somebody else will. If your not moving forward, your falling behind.

Who knows? Maybe there is a genetic component involved.

I doubt that. I think it's more about widespread anti-intellectualism among blacks, i.e. a cultural thing. This is regardless of social class, btw. More likely than not, a black guy is seen (by his own) as a traitor/sellout if dating white girls, and a phaggot if reading books.

Don't worry about it. The guys who can't afford to pay for it and pirate it are usually the folks who just want to "hoard" it rather than use it. If they had any talent to begin with, they'd be making enough money with the tool where the cost of it would be meaningless anyway. ;)

I can't count the number of people I've met whose livelihoods are made as graphic artists or photographers and are using pirated software. Hard for me to see any justification in that...

    They still do :)

The nice thing about iPad is it is that sort of a Trojan Horse consumer item.

It is far from a toy, though it is a "toy"...

I've been saying for a while that Apple is serious about getting a more established cred for their gaming business and this is another example.

Now parents can buy their kids (and themselves) a gaming device with free to $10 (...etc) games.

Long term it's a better investment than a lower cost handheld or console when you figure ALL of the games are at the price level lower than the majority of the games you'd buy (@ $20-$60 a pop) with a Nintendo/Microsoft/Sony device and aside from the Arcade level downloadable titles.

You also get FAR more utility from an iPad.

Haha, people still actually buy software from Adobe. The Internet is your friend people.

;) I agree that it's crazy to pay full price. Everyone has to know someone in college or who can at least get an educational discount. I mean of several hundred bucks, make a friend. Otherwise, yes, simply 5-10 minutes on the net can yield you the full CS Suite and all the major plug ins. I think the total available in that time is about $3,500.

ThinkSecret is generally dead on when it comes to things like this. So, it'd be great if they released an updated 23" iMac. I just got a 5G iPod 30GB in July and am happy with it so I don't need a new 'pod. And yes, I just got a new MacBook 2 weeks ago, but for future purchases, a 23" iMac would be neat.

The system uses some of the 4 GiB of physical address space to map I/O busses and devices.

x86 has had a 64Gb physical address space available for quite a while.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Address_Extension

Mac OS X on x86 requires PAE AIUI.

I have a 4 GiB Dell D620, but Windows and Linux only see about 3.1 GiB of that due to the I/O space issues. I expect that OSX86 has the same restrictions - since it's a hardware issue.

Don't know about Windows, but Linux can't see all 4Gb because some of it is reserved for the kernel.

    http://www.spack.org/wiki/LinuxRamLimits

You can build your own kernel with a custom user/kernel split, eg. I've used one with the reserved kernel space reduced to <0.5Gb...

That will do wonders for my battery life.

But, the further I can get away from physically connecting to a computer for syncing and backing up, the happier I will be. Steps in the right direction.
